These are 4 images created in Photoshop. When these are imported into Illustrator how can you make them vertically aligned with even spaces between them?

Save the Photoshop file in the .PSD format so that layers stays intact.

Open the file in Illustrator and change the Files of Type to Photoshop to guarantee the layering.

You will get two options: Convert Photoshop layers to objects or Flatten Photoshop layers to a single image. Select the first option.

Navigate to Window and choose Tile to see both the files.
Lock the three layers. To make the layer active, click on the little button and use Control+C to copy. Click on the original file with the background and press Control+V. Do this for each layer. They will paste on top of one another.
Minimize the file of the four original pictures. Maximize the file with the background where the pictures were pasted. Reorganize the level of each layer if they got pasted in the wrong sequence. Open Align > Show Options. Click on Use Preview Bounds and Align to Artboard.

Go to Distribute Spacing and click on Vertical Distribute Space.
Your images may be too large after distribution. Select all and then press Shift key while pressing on the corner at the bottom. Resize to fit the background. Use the arrow key to move the pieces up or down. The pictures will be aligned to the artboard. You may find them off centre from the actual background. Readjust the alignment of the background by tapping the arrow key while it is selected.
.
To add text to the piece and place it accurately at the centre, select the two layers and press the Horizontal Align Centre button.
Now everything should be aligned correctly.
